VISA WAIVER PROGRAMME

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR ENTRY TO THE USA

Following a review of security procedures at all points of entry in the USA, the Immigration Department has updated its policy on passengers entering the United States using the current Visa Waiver Programme, of which the UK is a participant.

Since October 1, 2003,  British passport holders will only be permitted to enter the United States if they hold a machine readable passport. Passports of this kind have a machine readable strip at the bottom of the data page. This means that the passport details can be read by a machine at passport control. If you are in any doubt as to whether your passport is machine readable, you should contact the UK Passport Agency.

Please note, that the older style blue passport, much beloved by many British passport holders, is not a machine readable passport.

If you have such a passport, either apply for a new one from the UK Passport office, or apply for a US B1-B2 visa from the US embassy.

Additionally, family groups will be required to obtain individual passports for each person travelling, including all children and infants. If your children are currently listed on your passport it will be necessary to obtain a new passport for them.

Should you require a new passport, apply to the British Passport Office as soon as possible, to ensure sufficient time for this to be issued prior to your date of travel. It is the responsibility of the traveller, to ensure that they have either a machine readable passport, or a US visa if travelling to the states on or after October 1, 2003.
